The title 72 Frankls comes from a family reunion we had at the end of May 1994 in Berlin. Adolf “Dolfi” Frankl was being honored at the Bundestag (the German Parliamentary) for his artwork and the surviving Frankls and their descendants came in from all over the world. We were seated at a few large tables for a luncheon. I sat next to my great aunt Stefanie Frankl. During lunch Stefanie suddenly started crying, I tried to comfort her and asked her what happened, she told me that when our family would have family reunions in Bratislava before the war, there would be over 100 Frankls gathered in celebration. With time most families grow in number, 50 years later, ours have shrunk. Her words left a deep impression on me. All I could do was hold her frail hand in mine. For some reason, the number 72 stuck with me. Over 72 members of our family were murdered in the Holocaust. I am making this documentary movie to memorialize them and to tell the story of the survivors.
